Why I Started Hosting With Service

From Novell Networks to the Birth of the Web

Before the internet was a household name, I was in the trenches in Tucson, Arizona. Throughout the 1990s, I ran a computer sales and support company, helping small businesses upgrade from standalone PCs to complex networked systems.

When the internet arrived, my clients naturally turned to me. They needed websites, but they quickly realized that the "technical back-end"—domain registration, FTP, IP addressing, and server configurations—was a language they didn't want (or need) to learn.

The "Big-Box" Problem

As I helped my clients, I noticed a frustrating trend with the major hosting providers. Whether it was GoDaddy, Hostinger, or A.I.T., the experience was often the same:

• Scripted Support: If you had a problem, you talked to a "front-line" person reading from a script. If your issue wasn't on their list, you were stuck waiting for a callback that might never come.
• The Language Barrier: Support was often outsourced to people who didn't understand the nuances of a small American business.
• • Technical Overload: The admin panels were designed for "geeks," not for business owners trying to run a shop or a service.

Becoming the "Computer Guy" for the Web

I realized that my clients didn't want a hosting account; they wanted a partner. They wanted to call someone, explain what they needed in plain English, and have it "just happen."

In 1998, I created Designing Results to be that one-stop shop. Over time, I realized that while I could handle the design, my true passion and expertise lay in the technical "heavy lifting." I created HostingWithService.com to separate that technical excellence into its own entity.

Still Here, Still Human

Today, I still host many of those same clients from the early days. My goal hasn't changed since 1990: To take the pain out of technology.
